Abstract: A quasi experimental study with pre and post test without control group was undertaken in the slum area, Jagathpura, Jaipur.  Data were collected from 94 Parents of working children to assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching module regarding hazards of child labour on the knowledge of parents of working children and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that highest percentage (55%) of parents was in the age group of 35-44 years and  majority (72%) of them were fathers, 44% of them had primary school education and more or less similar percentage (51% and 49%) of them were from nuclear and joint family, most (80%) of them were hindus,36% of them were doing small business and 44% of them had three children, majority (72%) of them had one working child and 42% of working children were between 11-12 years and most (88%) of the working children were male. Overall pre test mean Knowledge score was (9.09+1.96)which is 36.36% of the total reveals that the parents of working children had poor knowledge on “Hazards of child labour post test mean knowledge score was (17.15+2.05) which is 68.6% of the total score, reveals good knowledge of the parents of working children.  The difference in mean percentage between pre and post test was around 32.24% shows that the video assisted teaching module was effective in improving the knowledge of parents of working children regarding Hazards of child labour. Highly significant difference was found between pre and posttest knowledge score (P<0.001)and No significant association was found between the posttest knowledge scores when compared to the demographic variables of parents of working children (P>0.05) except of education.

Abstract: Women’s health recognizes that the health of women is related to the biological, social and cultural dimensions of women’s lives. Moreover, women’s normal life events or rites of passages, such as menstruation, children, and menopause are considered part of normal female development, rather than syndromes as diseases requiring only medical treatment. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of osteoporosis among women, to identify the risk of osteoporosis among women, to find out the relationship of prevalence with selected variables such as age, number of children, education, income, residence, occupation, to find out the association of osteoporosis risk with selected variables such as age, number of children, education, income, residence, occupation of women, and to prepare a pamphlet on preventive measures of osteoporosis for women.

Abstract: Smoking is a substance, most commonly tobacco which is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. Adults with some form of mental illness have a smoking rate 70 percent higher than adults with no mental illness. An admission to hospital, nurses’ role and wide availability puts them in a prime position to encourage people to quit smoking. Knowledge and practice towards smoking and smoking cessation have an important role in implementing smoking cessation. The major finding of the study showed that the respondents were 77 (73.3%) out of 105. Among them, 2 (2.6%) and 75 (97.4%) subjects were smokers and non-smokers respectively; 25 (32.5%) and 52 (67.5%) subjects were with and without de-addiction unit experience respectively. Irrespective of this experience majority of subjects possessed good knowledge and practice. Irrespective of gender, nurses possessed good knowledge, but male subjects’ practice was significantly (χ²=2.254, p=0.132) high than female. The mean score was 31.69± 6.260 and 28.7 ±8.35 for knowledge and practice respectively .There was positive correlation between knowledge and practice (r = 0.400 at p=0.01 level).

Abstract: The correct knowledge and practice of breast-feeding of mothers directly affect child’s health. Therefore this project aimed to describe the pattern of breast feeding practice among the mothers attending El-Shohada PHC, Ismailia, Egypt; as well as determine the mothers’ knowledge about benefits and the important tips of breastfeeding. Questionnaire interviews were held with mothers inquiring them about their positioning of the baby during breast-feeding, application of early and exclusive breast-feeding; and duration and frequency of breast-feds. The results of the project show that approximately 64% of the mothers preform the breastfeeding correctly with proper positioning of baby. However, 33% of the mothers did not follow the correct breastfeeding practice. Regarding the knowledge background of mothers about breastfeeding , 77% of total population know the benefits of breastfeeding to their child, however 61% was not familiar with the benefits that they can get when they breastfed. 70.1% of the mothers chose that washing their breasts is the best precaution before breastfeeding their children. 68% of the interviewed mothers follow the WHO recommendation about exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months. Besides mostly all the mothers, which is 97% prefer to breastfed on the demand of her child. 48.2% of mothers answered thatthe first kind of food during weaning was milk products beside other fluids. In spite of the low socio economic level of the district where the project was held, all the mothers were certain about one thing: breastfeeding was beneficial to the baby over artificial feeding. Regardless of that and of the fact that 66.7% of mothers have general, but shallow, knowledge about breastfeeding; there should be continuous campaigns held in such districts to ensure that mothers receive the correct guidance from a trusted source.

Abstract: A descriptive exploratory design was used in this study to assess the ICU Syndrome among patients admitted to ICU and the practices to prevent them in a selected hospital at Mangalore. The sample consisted of 30 patients and 30 staff nurses who met the inclusion criteria. The subjects were selected by purposive sampling. The investigator selected the patients who were admitted in the ICU between the age group of 30-60 yrs who have no metabolic disorders. The investigator assessed the ICU Syndrome among patients using the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale and CAM-ICU Scale. The staff nurses were given a self reported preventive practice questionnaire and data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Majority of the patients exhibited Altered Level of Consciousness while assessment with CAM-ICU scale. The data revealed that ICU Syndrome is present in the current scenario and majority of the cases are left undiagnosed because of lack of knowledge and efficiency in diagnosing it and differentiating it from hypoactive and hyperactive ICU Syndrome rather than considering the patient to be in a drowsy or sedative state. The evidence suggests that out of 24% of the subjects, who developed ICU Syndrome, 17% of them had hypoactive ICU Syndrome and 7% had hyperactive ICU Syndrome.

Abstract: CAD is the leading cause of death globally and one of the major health burdens worldwide. Smoking, dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and physical inactivity are modifiable & preventable risk factors. This study attempted to quantify knowledge regarding preventive measures of Coronary Artery disease among patients attending OPD of selected hospital of Ludhiana city. Information was collected from 150 patients attending medical and surgical OPD’s who were not diagnosed with any of heart disease. Questionnaire related to Socio demographic variables and knowledge items related to prevention of coronary artery disease was used to collect the information. The result revealed that only 15.33% of subjects had good level of knowledge, and 84.67% subject had poor level of knowledge regarding prevention of CAD. The highest mean knowledge score of 14.55 + 0.65 was in the age group of 41-50 years. The study recommends the need of awareness raising program regarding preventive measures of CAD to decrease the burden of such devastating disease.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to develop and test  the validity and reliability of the Patient’s DVT Risk Assessment Tool. Patient’s DVT Risk Assessment Tool is a new instrument designed to identify the risk of DVT in hospitalized patients. It consists of 27 items.The results of testing the Patient’s DVT Risk Assessment Tool suggest that it is valid in measuring the DVT risk in patients admitted in medical,surgical,gynae wards,ICU and Emergency department.The content validity index of the newly developed tool is 0.986.Internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.745).Interclass correlation coefficient value is 0.98,Cohen’s kapa value is 0.898,percentage agreement is 96%.We conclude that Patient’s DVT Risk Assessment Tool is a valid, reliable instrument that is quick and easy to use in the Hospital setting.

Abstract: Accountability is an essential concept of professional practice. Nursing practice is surrounded by many legal aspects because nurses are accountable for their professional   judgments and action. Nurses deal with the most fundamental human events like birth, death and suffering. They encounter many legal issues surrounding these sensitive areas a good knowledge of legal aspects of health care is necessity. Good knowledge of legal aspects of health care is necessity for the implementation of high quality of nursing practice in the world of latest medical technological advances. The major findings of the study showed that 96.67% of the participants were female, 73.33% of them belong to the age group of 21-30 years of age, 68% were diploma holders, 90.66% of staff nurses were trained from private institutes and 64.67% of them were with 0-5years experience. 30.67% of staff nurses did not attend any in service education. The knowledge scores in each category abbreviations (2.33), legal liability (4.26), legal terms (2.56), legal responsibilities (14.99) and basic rights (1.44). The relationship of selected variables showed that there was no significant relationship between nurses knowledge with their age, gender, duration of clinical experience and in service education. There was a significant relationship between level of knowledge with their professional qualification and training institute ( p<0.05 ).

Title: A Study to Assess the Knowledge Regarding Legal Responsibilities in Nursing

Abstract: Patients suffering from suicidal behaviors among substance abusers are common, especially if substance abuse is comorbid with another psychiatric disorder. Although our knowledge of substance abuse and suicide behavior is increasing, we lack sufficient knowledge of suicidal thoughts among substance abusers. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of suicidal thoughts among poly-substance abusers and its correlative factors. This was a cross sectional case control study on 239 subjects. 122 Cases fulfilled the DSM- IV -TR criteria of substance abuse for two or more substances. Participants` were administered Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) in addition to semi-structured psychiatric interview and examination. Correlation between current suicidal thought and psycho-demographic factors was calculated using the Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Statistically significant positive correlation with current suicidal thoughts in poly-substance abusers was found with Lifetime history of suicidal ideation or attempt, age, high altitude residence, lower educational level, presence of academic or occupational deterioration, history of legal troubles, amphetamine and volatile abuse, duration of substance abuse, presence of comorbid psychiatric disorder, disturbed home atmosphere, poor family support, family history of substance abuse or suicidal attempts, and Beck Depressive Inventory. While negative correlation was noticed with religiosity, Age of starting cigarette smoking and age of bereavement. This study demonstrated that associative psycho-demographic factors characterized by chaotic social life and living in high altitude in addition to comorbid psychiatric disorders may trigger suicidal thoughts in poly-substance abusers, and that religious upbringing is a helpful method for protection.

Title: Study of Suicidal Thoughts and Its Demographic and Psychological Correlates in a Sample of Poly-Drug Users

Abstract: This focus of the paper is to give a more comprehensive picture on health spending in the State of Karnataka for the period of ten years 1999-2000 to 2008-09. The analysis shows that health spending is still low in the state (less than 1%) and there is an increased dependence on the central government for improving health spending. The analysis also reveals that the state spends more than 85% of funds on recurring expenditures, of which program costs and expenditure on human resource make up around 80% of the total. The rest is in the form of transfers, whose point of expenditure is not fully known. The per capita expenditures of the state is only Rs 225 (USD 4.5 approximately), and if other departments spending on health were included, it would increase to Rs 390 (USD 6.8 approximately). The NRHM spending of the Union Government, pushes these expenditure to Rs 468 (USD 9 approximately). The second part of the analysis looks at how health care spending by programs takes place across different levels. The analysis reveals that public health and primary care spending are taken up largely by the local levels of government, but they are severely constrained for funds. The analysis is supported by the fact that close to 99% of the funds to local governments are for salaries alone. At the state government level, secondary and tertiary care becomes focus areas for investments. The analysis found that the central government plays an important role in funding primary and public health within the state, while the state’s role is present but minimal. The paper also assesses the programme wise expenditure of the state with and without the union funds by comparing programmes with the same objectives.

Title: THE TREND AND GROWTH PATTERN OF HEALTH EXPENDITURE IN KARNATAKA: An Empirical Analysis

Abstract: The links between substance misuses, deliberate self-harm and crime have been well described in the literature. The aims of this study were:

(1)To describe the repetition, the methods and the feelings experienced before & after deliberate self-harm (DSH) episode in a sample of DTTO clients;

(2)To investigate the correlation between DSH and suicide & traumatic past experience in this group.

Methods: A consecutive series of 60 clients attending the Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham (LSL) and Croydon DTTO services was recruited and assessed for DSH, using a self-report questionnaire.  Relevant data for the study was obtained. The study employed standard logistic regression for testing the research hypotheses in order to achieve the objectives of the study.

Results: Thirty-nine subjects (65%) had a history of DSH, with the mean age of the first episode being 23 years (+/-6.5). The majority (72%) had harmed themselves in the past. Cutting & overdosing were the most common methods of DSH, occurring in 54% and 51% of the sample respectively. Head banging (15%), picking unhealed wounds (13%) and other methods (10%) were also described by the sample. The most common feeling experienced before these episodes of DSH was ‘emotional pain’ (described by 64% of the sample). ‘Regretfulness’ was the common feeling experience after an episode of DSH (in 41% of the sample). Alcohol and drugs were frequently implicated in the episodes and were perceived to have aggravated the DSH episodes in 80% of the sample.

Almost half of the DSH sample had previously made a suicide attempt and 82% had a past history of a traumatic experience. However, there were no statistical correlation between DSH and suicide & a traumatic past experience.

Conclusions: This pilot study of DSH in a DTTO sample is limited by the small sample size. However, very little research has been carried out in the DTTO setting and the findings point to themes that should be tested in larger samples. There was a trend for the recurrence of DSH act. Cutting & overdosing were the most common methods of DSH. No significant predictors for DSH were found with respect to suicide and a traumatic past experience.

Title: Deliberate Self–Harm in Drug Treatment and Testing Orders (DTTO) Clients in London: Description and Correlation

Abstract: This study aims to describe the socio-demographic characteristics of clients attending Croydon & Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham (LSL) Drug Treatment and Testing Orders Services (DTTO) who have a history of Deliberate Self-Harm (DSH), and to illustrate the correlation between DSH and substance misuse in this client group. In addition, the study will explore the co-morbidity of DSH with depression or impulsivity in this client group. Sixty consecutive clients attending the Croydon and LSL DTTO Services were recruited and assessed for DSH. A self-report semi-structured questionnaire, in three parts, was used. In addition two standardised questionnaires: The Beck Depression Inventory Scale (BDI) and the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) were used. The result showed that the study group (n=60) was predominantly male (Male 53: Female 7), unemployed and with no qualifications. The majority of the clients were referred to the DTTO service for shoplifting. This study revealed that the following substances (in descending order) were used: Cocaine/Crack, Heroin, Alcohol, Cannabis, Benzodiazepines and other substance. Of 60 clients, 39 had a history of DSH. Substance use was the main factor implicated in DSH. The study also showed that heroin users who deliberately self-harm are 9 times more likely to be alcohol users. The DSH clients scored higher in the severe impulsive category compared with the non-DSH group. However, there was no significant predictor for DSH in relation to demographic factors, type and route of substance use and impulsive or depression.

Abstract: This paper presents workforce safety program for reduction of possible health reactions on work force because of emanation of harmful gases in paint industry. Considering health concerns related to paint industry, the issues of occupational safety and prevention of professional diseases in the paint industry have become urgent problems to be addressed by both national and international health organizations. The negative effects imposed by paint, when especially added to headaches, allergic reactions or heart stressing, are among the dangers threatening workforce health. To ensure occupational safety and prevent professional diseases, employers are to develop and implement workforce safety programs, which, being properly managed will result in reduction of possible health reactions.
