Abstract: Menopause is a sign of a transition into the second half of adult life – a time of role changes, greater independence, and personal growth. How a woman views menopause may depend on the value she places on being young and attractive, her attitudes toward women’s roles, and her own circumstances.

Aim: To compare and determine the relationship between social support and psychological well-being among working and non-working post-menopausal woman.

Methods: The population included in this study was working and non-working Post-Menopausal Women. Purposive Sampling method was used. Tools used in this study was Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire (FSSQ) developed by Broadhead et al., (1988) and Psychological General Well-Being Index (PGWBI) was developed by Chassany, O., (2004). The data was subjected to statistical analysis – t-test and correlation.

Results: The findings of this study reveal that there is a statistically significant relationship between social support and psychological well-being among post-menopausal women. But there was no significant difference in the level of working and non-working post-menopausal women’s social support and psychological well-being.

Conclusion: The weaker correlation between social support and psychological well-being shows if social support is increases, we cannot deduce that it will also improves the psychological well-being of post-menopausal women. Hence, the major life style changes of working and non-working women, i.e., post-menopause could not affect the level of social support and psychological well-being of women.

Abstract: Good governance connotes that government is committed to creating a system founded on Justice, peace, protection of human security and civil liberties that promote participation, transparency, responsiveness, consensus oriented, equality and inclusiveness, effectiveness and efficiency with accountability.However, one of the means to good governance has always been adjudged to be the practice of democratic system of government which means the government of the people and for the peopleconstituted through free and fair election.Notwithstanding, the democratic system of government could equally generate conflicts depending on the manners of governance because good governance premise on peaceful management of conflict that can bring a desirable positive change to enhance development. Conflicts in governance are generated when there are opposinginterest that if not properly managed could lead to confrontational and economic downfall. It is observed that governance induced conflict inNigeriandemocratic system is as a result of social, economic, political inequality and marginalization across Nigerian states.  This paper reflected on how Nigerian democratic system for over 20 years is still crawling and unable to put in place good governance, integrative machinery for its conflicting but dynamic populations to nationhood.  The paper examines major contending issues affecting the Nigerian governance and democracy, such as multi-culture, state creation, indigenes/settler’s dichotomy, federal character principles, corruption, poverty, political and economic exclusion, bad governance and many more. The paper recommended necessary solutionson how to promote good governance, social justice, economic development that can avert conflict in Nigerian democracy.

Title: Democratic Governance and Conflict Management in a Complex Multi-Cultural Society: The Nigeria Chronicle

Abstract: In Nigeria, like most parts of the world, investigation revealed that suicide behaviour has being socio-culturally oriented, fueling negative attitudes toward the act, perpetuating secrecy which includes non-reporting. Suicide, which refers to taken one’s life by self is associated with factors such as; depression, alcoholism, hopelessness, substance abuse, possession of lethal weapons, terminal illness, loss of loved ones and bankruptcy or collapse of business. The paper was an ethical appraisal of suicide in Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to establish the prevalence of suicide in Nigeria, identify the possible causes of the rising cases of suicide in Nigeria, examine the implications of suicide on the Nigerian society especially the youth and to proffer workable solutions through examining guidance and counselling ways through which suicide can be effectively managed in Nigeria. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. Materials for the study were drawn from primary and secondary sources. The study also found that most Nigerians viewed suicide unfavourably based on the belief in the sanctity of life argument. The paper also found that suicide had implications on the society. The paper suggests that all stakeholders, including government, nongovernmental organizations and others, should mount a formidable advocacy towards the reduction of suicide in Nigeria, the press and all media organizations should be involved in regular enlightenment of the public on the harm done by suicide, medical organizations, like the hospitals, should be involved in rendering prompt attention to those who exhibit suicidal behaviour and those at risk. The paper concluded that life is sacred nobody has the authority to take life.

Abstract: Quality of education depends on various factors among which are good preparations of student-teacher education programmes. Student-teacher preparation has a crucial significance in implementing competence based curriculum. The main stakeholders in implementing competence based curriculum are teachers, thus the professional competence of teachers can endow learner’s competent knowledge in their profession which promotes national and global development. Soon after her independence in 1961, Tanzania, like many other African countries, adopted a content based curriculum. However, in 2005, Tanzania introduced a curriculum which led to the development of competence based curriculum for learning and assessments in education. This study investigated issues surrounding the implementation of competence based curriculum in student-teacher education programmes. Specifically, the study focused on the resources, instructional strategies and assessment procedures in implementing competence based curriculum. In view of the findings, it seemed that the implementation of competence based curriculum in student-teacher education programmes schools was quite effective. Thus, it was recommended that effective programmes and regular training for student-teachers should be conducted in order to enable them acquire up-to-date teaching skills as required by the changes introduced in the education curricula.

Abstract: The study empirically examined the relationship between value chain management and organizational competitiveness in the hospitality industry in the South-South geo-political zone of Nigeria.  The study adopted the cross sectional survey design .The study population consists of 46 four-star rated hotels in the study area. Questionnaire was designed and distributed to 312 senior managers that were selected with the simple random sampling technique from the population of study to serve as the respondents to the study research instrument. The value chain management construct was operationalized as information sharing, customer focus and strategic supplier partnership and competiveness measured by innovativeness, product quality, and responsiveness. The findings of the study resulting from the descriptive and inferential analysis revealed a strong positive relationship between the dimensions of value chain management and the measures of organizational competitiveness. The study concludes that there is a strong relationship between value chain management and organizational competitiveness therefore, recommended amongst others the need for customer focus with a view to accommodating all constituents that brings value to the service delivery chain. This include employees of the sector who should be strategically made to acquire requisite skills and competencies for improved service delivery and competitiveness.

Abstract: This project is confined to Good Governance theory, as it entails democratic governance values to ease Assessing Democratic Governance, the quest for Good Governance in Malawi. The research focused much on the phenomenon of Democratic Governance where in its methodology, three political administrations were selected and assessed  by using  secondary data sources  ranging from books, scholarly articles and so forth.  In its findings the research has found that,  all three administrations failed to cope up with democratic governance values and messed up things in the process by allowing corruption due to violation of democratic values that determine the nation's stand on Good Governance. Since democracy emergence in Malawi, violation of human rights by those in command have been occurring. It is like a pass on problem, from one political administration to the other. To overcome this malaise, Malawi Government should double check its political institutions more precisely political administrations for Good Governance to flourish, hence sustainability.

Abstract: Crime precipitates fear, unrest, breach of peace, and general insecurity as it is widely experienced in Nigeria. However, to maintain peaceful coexistence and sustain check and balance, there are laws, rules and regulations that guides human conducts and relationship with one another especially armed conflicts and criminal activities. The law that guides criminal conducts are usually referred to as criminal law, Criminal law was enacted to checkmate criminal behaviors. Arising from this; the paper sought and observed the reasons for the persistently increase in crime in spite of the existence of criminal law in Nigeria.The study adopts the historical method which involves the use of records and secondary data.  The information was collected through content analysis of relevant books and documents, web rich files, downloaded papers, statutes, decided cases and journals. The paper measured the adequacy of criminal law and the criminal justice system to determine whether it is adequate enough to prevent crime and maintain peace in the Nigerian society. Findings showed that the Nigeria criminal law and the criminal justice system in Nigeria are not adequate enough to fight a 21st century criminal activities in Nigeria society and various recommendations were made accordingly.

Abstract: This study sets out to examine the influence of interest groups in public policy formulation in Anambra state in the fourth republic. This was necessitated by the prevalent fallouts, strikes and disagreements that have existed between Anambra state government and interest groups. The theory adopted for the work is the Group theory and data were drawn mainly from secondary sources as content analysis was employed and reinforced with unstructured discussions and interviews. The study exposed disjointed policy issues in the fourth republic that caused the outburst of interest groups against the government with cases of chequered state of facilities in the health and education sector, unremitted pension deductions amongst others. Based on the findings, the researcher made recommendations amongst others that the Anambra State government should have a formal and statutory forum where the government meets with these groups to consistently deliberate on core sensitive issues as this will help to reflect the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

Abstract: Conflict is inevitable among human beings, especially those whose dealings and interactions are confined within the framework of a complex organizational setting. Managing conflicts in academic institutions like the polytechnics has important implications for the creation of the much needed enabling environment for academic excellence, research and innovation. Thus, the imperatives of conflict management for organisational performance in Federal Polytechnics in South East, Nigeria, which is the focus of this study tend to specifically determine the relationship between the institution’s trade unions and performance of Federal Polytechnics in South-East, Nigeria and to examine the relationship between management communication channels and performance of Federal Polytechnics in South-East, Nigeria. The study adopted a survey approach with a population of 9594 academic and non-academic staff of the three Federal Polytechnic in the South-East, Nigeria. Using the Taro Yamane formula, a sample size of 400 was obtained. The study revealed, among others that there is no relationship between the institution’s trade unions and performance of Federal Polytechnics in South-East, Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended, among others that labour unions should see themselves as partners in progress and that communication channels should be strengthened and expanded to ensure that all segments of the organization are covered in the communication process.

Abstract: This study titled “Staffing Process and Employees’ Service Delivery: A Study of Ebonyi State Civil Service System was born out of the desire to investigate the actual causes of the declining level of employees’ service delivery in the civil service system. Therefore, the study examined the relationship between staffing process and employees’ service delivery in Ebonyi State civil service system. Specifically, the study; investigated the extent to which inadequate employment planning affects employee service delivery in Ebonyi State Civil Service; examine the effect of quota system in the employment of quality workforce into Ebonyi state civil service, and; evaluate the effect of employment by executive fiat on the service delivery capacity of Ebonyi state civil service employees. The study formulated three hypotheses and adopted descriptive survey design with a sample size of 369 respondents. Data collected were analyzed using frequency distribution table with their corresponding percentage, while hypotheses were tested using pearson product moment of correlation co-efficient. Major findings were among others; inadequate employment planning affect employees’ service delivery; quota system of employment affect the employment of quality workforce into Ebonyi state Civil Service; fiat method of employment affects service delivery capacity of Ebonyi state Civil Service Employees. The study therefore recommends among others, adequate employment planning; redefinition of quota system to take into consideration the competency of the person(s) projected for employment from each zone, states and/or regions; and zero tolerance to complementary cards and executive order during employment process.

Title: STAFFING PROCESS AND EMPLOYEES’ SERVICE DELIVERY: A STUDY OF EBONYI STATE CIVIL SERVICE SYSTEM

Abstract: This work deals with two ethnics groups: the Tai Lue in Sipsong Panna, South Yunnan, and the Tai Ahom in the northeast Indian state of Assam. It has to be emphasized that for centuries these two minorities had no personal contact. The group known nowadays as the Tai Ahom migrated from the border area of Northeast Burma/Southwest Yunnan through Northern Burma to the Brahmaputra valley in Assam about 800 years ago. There was a successful Tai Ahom kingdom which lasted for 600 years from the mid 13th century until the end of the first Burmese-Anglo War in 1826. The Tai Lue established their first kingdom in South Yunnan in the end of the 12th century. Nowadays, the two groups live under different political systems: the Tai Ahom within the parliamentary democracy of India, and the Tai Lue under the socialist, one-party state of China. Both groups are, in the states in which they live, a social minority and are economically marginalized, without access to the sea and many hundreds of kilometers away from the capital of their state. They lived under massive restrictions on their cultures throughout their histories due to either foreign domination or as a result of assimilation to their respective environments. This fact has been held up in recent decades by various revitalization processes and led to new summits of traditional and religious practices including the Tai language and other cultural characteristics. Since the 1950s in South-Yunnan the district where the Tai Lue live has been called Autonomous Prefecture of Sipsong Panna. The monastery network of Keng Tung (Northeast Burma), Northern Thailand, Northwestern Laos and Sipsong Panna, contributed immense financially and personally to restore the monasteries which have been demolished during the mid 20th century, so that the culture of the Tai Lue, especially the language and Theravada Buddhist practices have survived. The Tai Ahom in Assam and the smaller Tai minorities in northeast India are supported and regularly visited by representatives of the King of Thailand (Princess Sirindorn) as well as by delegates of the Thai government to promote Pan-Tai relationships over the South-, Southeast- and East Asian corridor consisting of Northeast India, Burma, South China, Laos and Thailand, and to foster economic and cultural cooperation between India and Thailand.

Abstract: Teachers all over the world encounter some problems in the course of discharging their professional duties. The success or failure of the teacher depends largely on how they handle these challenges. A lot of articles have been devoted on the teacher and teacher related issues, but little research has been done on college tutors and the subjects that they teach. This article tries to fill that knowledge gap by looking at the challenges that college tutors encounter in delivering geography lessons in social studies curriculum. This descriptive study used a cross-sectional survey in which aggregated data were collected from different participants at different points in time. The study used a sample size of sixty-two (62) and was non-experimental in nature. Self-developed questionnaire was used as instrument for data collection.

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to identify how the development and implementation of the English language curriculum for ESL students in an American university. The ESL program helps students that are not native English speakers to learn how to read, write, and talk in English. This study incorporated both qualitative and quantitative designs. It comprised of three sample groups of an administrator, two teachers, and thirty-two ESL students. Data was collected using semi structured interviews and surveys. The study revealed that the curriculum development process conformed to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Standards. The process took into consideration the input and needs of teachers and students. However, there was a lack of course books tailored specifically for the ESL curriculum. Moreover, the learning process was intensive and took a short time that limited the effective learning of some students. Despite a few limitations the results were an accurate representation of the ESL curriculum.

Abstract: This research was a public administration assessment on the compliance of the Republic Act 9184, otherwise known as the Government Procurement Reform Act, through descriptive method of research for the seven engineering districts within the Province of Cebu. The research meant to disclose whether these identified National Government Agencies within the Province of Cebu are compliant to the provisions of the Act. It also intended to know the significant differences of the perception between the respondent groups including the challenges come upon, thus, leading to the development of a continual improvement plan. The study employed the use of a self-made survey questionnaire designed for the engineering districts within the Province of Cebu. In terms of providing the accuracy of the data, the study was limited in the manner of the perception of the respondents. The research population of the study involved the One Hundred (100) respondents classified into two groups directly involved in the procurement process- the agency’s BAC and the contractors. The Weighted Mean was utilized in the data analysis and presentation of findings for the research. The statistical data were further analyzed using t-Test: Two Sample Assuming Equal Variances. Based on the results of the research, the management needed improvement in the manner in which it implements the requirements of the procurement act on the conduct of the Pre-Bid Conference, the Bid Evaluation and Ranking as well as the posting of its performance bonds and the presence of the observers as set forth in the Act. The continual improvement plan was then developed for better compliance on the specific provisions and safeguards the best interest of the general public which will facilitate towards the aim of infrastructure development.
