Additive Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering: Recent Advances and Industrial Applications – A Critical Mini Review

Abdulaziz Aldhafeeri

Abstract: Additive Manufacturing (AM), commonly known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, has revolutionized modern manufacturing by enabling the fabrication of complex components directly from digital models with minimal material waste. Unlike conventional subtractive manufacturing, AM builds parts layer by layer, providing greater design flexibility, shorter development cycles, and improved material utilization. This mini-review summarizes recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies, discusses their applications in mechanical engineering, evaluates current technical challenges, and highlights future research opportunities associated with smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0.

Keywords: Additive Manufacturing, 3D Printing, Mechanical Engineering, Industry 4.0, Metal Additive Manufacturing, Smart Manufacturing.
