Digital Twin Technology in Mechanical Engineering: Current Applications, Challenges, and Future Opportunities – A Critical Mini Review

Abstract: Digital Twin (DT) technology has become one of the most significant innovations in modern mechanical engineering by integrating physical assets with dynamic virtual models that continuously receive real-time operational data. Through the combination of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud computing, and advanced simulation techniques, Digital Twins enable predictive maintenance, performance optimization, and lifecycle management. This mini-review summarizes recent developments in Digital Twin technology, discusses its applications in mechanical engineering, evaluates current technical limitations, and identifies future research opportunities supporting Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing.
