Abstract: Within the matrilineal Khasi society, this study examines the cultural and symbolic significance of Ka Jainsem, the traditional attire worn by Khasi women, as a marker of gendered and ethnic identity. Through a qualitative thematic analysis of existing literature, the study explores how Ka Jainsem conveys gendered responsibilities, cultural adaptation, and collective identity. Spanning from pre-colonial seclusion to post-independence assertions of identity, this traditional clothing reflects continuity amid historical and contemporary influences and serves as a visual representation of Khasi heritage.
The study highlights the central role of women in preserving tradition by embodying dignity, authority, and modesty-particularly in formal settings and rituals. It also underscores the evolving nature of Ka Jainsem, noting how it has incorporated modern styles while retaining its cultural essence, as seen in its use as a school uniform and in contemporary stylistic adaptations.
The findings affirm Ka Jainsem's dynamic role as a cultural artifact that bridges tradition and modernity. It supports the Khasi community’s ongoing efforts to preserve and reinterpret their identity in an increasingly interconnected world.
