The effect of groundwater on concrete foundations

Jumah Eid BinObaid, MESHAL ALBZAIE

Abstract: Concrete foundations are among the most important elements used in stabilizing structures, as they transfer loads to the soil layer, ensuring the stability of the structure over long periods. However, this is influenced by numerous environmental and geotechnical factors, the most significant of which is groundwater, considered the most influential and problematic factor in foundation engineering.

According to recent studies, groundwater not only affects the physical properties of the soil but also influences chemical reactions within the concrete, negatively impacting its mechanical properties over time.

Keywords: groundwater, Concrete foundations, stabilizing structures, geotechnical factors.
