Abstract: This study aimed to find out the correlations of Science teachers’ teaching styles and students’ learning styles with their academic performance among the secondary schools in the Zone 2 Division of Zambales for Academic Year 2010-2011. The descriptive-survey method adapted standardized test of Grasha-Reichmann teaching style survey and the VAK model learning styles standardized tool. Fifty five (55) Science teachers and two thousand ninety five (2,095) students were used as samples. Majority of the Science teacher-respondents were young adults, female, married, finished Bachelor’s Degree, specialized in Science and have been teaching for more than 10 years. The student-respondents were in normal school age, female and belonged to First Year Level; majority of the Science teacher-respondents were considered Expert as teaching style and only few were categorized as Facilitator, Delegator and Personal Model; most of the student-respondents were classified as visual learners; some were auditory learners and few were kinesthetic learners; the academic performance of student-respondents in Science subject was described as passing but not satisfactory. There were significant variations in the academic performance of students when grouped according to gender and year level; and a positive low correlation between the Science teachers’ teaching styles and the students’ learning style;  moderate positive correlation between Science teachers’ teaching styles and the academic performance of students and a positive high correlation between the students’ learning styles and their academic performance in the Science subject with a computed r-value of 0.82. All values computed are significant at 0.05 level of significance.

Abstract: India had always been known as the land that portrayed cultural and traditional vibrancy through its conventional art and craft. India is world famous for its rich heritage and traditional textiles, magnificent workmanship. It also symbolizes the identity of the ethnic group. Textiles are considered as a part of the complex rituals of life. Tribal people of India have always had a great flair for decoration and ornamentation. However their traditional crafts are less known to the outside world. In India, Todas are found only in the Nilgiri District of Tamilnadu State. Toda Tribes are very seclusion in nature and very few people know about this tribe and their unique embroidery. Few efforts are being taken by the government and other NGO’s to preserve Toda embroidery art.

The present study was undertaken with the aim to study traditional Toda embroidery and to develop designs based on the existing designs and adaptation of these developed designs on women’s kurtis. Four Toda munds (settlements) namely Manjakalmund, Tarnadmund, Muthinadmund and Bettumund were selected for the study. Data was collected through a survey using observation and interview method. The experiment on adapting Toda embroidery on kurtis had given a direction how this can be brought to the light of the world without changing the unique features. The study would be a step forward to preserve this art and showcase the skills of Todas to the outside world and to impart a new design dimensions to the fashion world.

Abstract: This paper offers a comprehensive picture and examination of resettlement in Canada and United States. Broadly speaking, resettlement is a mechanism which provides protection to refugees whose life, liberty, safety, health or other human rights are at risk in the country where they sought refuge Canada and United States are the two leading resettlement countries in the world. Canadian and United States resettlement model are the basis for an analysis of the intersection of rights, responsibility, and obligation in the absence of a legal scheme for refugee resettlement. The voluntary nature of resettlement is in contrast to the legal obligation of non-refoulement that States take on with the promise not to send back refugees who reach their territory and claim asylum. A comparative review of the programs in Canada and the United States is undertaken to point out and contrast respective differences, weaknesses, and strengths. This analysis shows how different are these two models.

Abstract: The development of the Web 2.0 and cloud computing has fostered a new era of openness and transparency in universities and colleges across the world: one that enables researchers, students, professors and professionals to work more efficiently, create new models, invent new products, and establish mutually beneficial international partnerships. Serious academic research is now increasingly dependent on ever more complex technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data (BD). But these new information and communication technologies (ICTs) are threatening centralised state controls at various levels, be it privacy, copyright, community management or law enforcement. This paper considers how some Western governments are trying to put an end to this new era of relative openness and global information exchange with extrajudicial measures, programmes of mass-surveillance and investigatory-powers legislation. In the end, I argue that a rational comprehension of these reactionary measures depends upon first situating them within the fear-orienting background framework of the bogeyman.

Abstract: A German newspaper recently reported that Mr Jean-Claude Junker accused Theresa May of being ‘deluded’ and said it was ‘more likely than not’ that Brexit negotiations would fail. Certainly, the neatness and simplicity of the in/out Brexit referendum as the only possible solution for political change in the UK might be a symptom of insanity. In this brief paper, I argue that the adoption of the motivated in/out delusion of Brexit by the UK people is likely to lead to positive epistemic achievements, such as a sense national unity and coherence, rather than the paralysing state of anxiety, stress and depression supposedly caused by mass immigration from Eastern Europe which is essentially imaginary and psychotic but not, for this reason, any less real or vital.

Abstract: The rapid growth in Information Communication and Technologies (ICT) has brought remarkable changes in the twenty-first century. There is a growing demand on educational institutions to use ICT to teach the skills and knowledge. Scholars and policymakers alike have valued the potential of digital technology to revolutionize the education system. However, notwithstanding the exhilaration around technology, the technology may not have the power to change teaching and learning practices. Indeed, intrinsic barriers, such as preexisting teaching beliefs, attitudes toward the educational value of technology, and comfort with technology have been shown to influence the ways in which teachers use technology in the classroom. This study sought to assess the effect of teachers’ capacity, resource availability, stakeholder participation and leadership on implementation of digital learning in primary schools in Dagoretti Sub-County. This study was guided by Resource-Based Theory, The Diffusion of Innovation (DOI), social constructivism, and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This study employed descriptive survey. The target population was made of the 24 head teachers, 243 upper primary classroom teachers in the 24 public primary schools in Dagoretti Sub-County. From the population the study picked a sample of 24 head teachers, 143 upper primary classroom teachers through random sampling technique. To collect primary data a semi-structured questionnaire with both close ended and open-ended questions were used. Pilot study was done to establish reliability and validity of the research questionnaires. The researcher had the questionnaires filled in and then collected them later through drop and pick later method for the ones personally delivered. The data was then analyzed using descriptive statistics. The Likert scale was used to analyze the mean score and standard deviation. The findings were presented using tables and graphs for further analysis and to facilitate comparison, while explanation to the table and graphs were given in prose. The study revealed that most of the teachers in Dagoretti Sub-County had negative perception and attitude towards the implementation of digital learning, most of the teachers also lacked basic skills and education that could smoothly support the implementation of digital learning, most of the schools lacked adequate resources for the implementation of digital learning. there lacked strong management team to oversee the implementation of digital learning in their schools the stake holder co-operation was below necessitated levels and that there lacked strong measures that would ensure sustained relationship. Stakeholder participation and commitment highly influenced the implementation of digital learning in primary schools. The study concludes that teacher’ capacity, stakeholder commitment, leadership and resource availability influenced the implementation of digital learning in primary schools. Study recommends that adequate measures need to be put in place to promote teacher capacities, efforts should be concentrated on training and development, and the state government in collaboration with school management need to ensure allocative efficiency of resources as this was found to be a key crucial factor in digital learning implementation. stake holders who include the government, TSC, parents, donors, school management and pupils must be fully engaging in the implementation process, the role for every stake holder must be clear to avoid conflict in implementation and that the management must adopt the right transformational leadership that will positively propel the (change) implementation of digital learning in primary schools in Dagoretti sub-county.

Abstract: Today, we are living in a world where temperatures are rising, water shortages are more frequent, food supplies are increasingly scarce and the gap between rich and poor increasing. As a result, organizations locally and worldwide are reviewing their procurement operations and processes so as to yield a sustainable life. Sustainable procurement is not simply being ‘green’ but it is all about socially and ethically responsible purchasing, minimizing environmental impacts through supply chain, delivering economically sound solutions and business practice. The study aimed at assessing the effects of sustainable procurement practices on procurement performance in manufacturing sector a case of Unilever Kenya Ltd. The main findings of the study are that environmental framework results to effective efficient procurement performance; as a result of organizational culture being introduced to new staff there is teamwork among the employees and the values within the organization are line with the culture thus resulting to transparent and efficient procurement performance; ICT adoption have led to cost saving and transparent procurement performance while early supplier involvement in product design and development have led to cost control measures within the organization. This in turn results to efficient and efficiency procurement performance within the organization, transparent procurement performance which leads to cost saving. From the findings of the study, it was recommended that the ‘WE’ attitude be fully encouraged while the organization fully adopts automation to all the activities within procurement department. Since most studies on sustainable procurement practices have concentrated on oversees countries, further studies should be done concentrating on African countries with a key concentration on the benefits of sustainable procurement practices on procurement performance.

Abstract: The main condition for thinking in our post-truth era is to delight in debating and challenging everything written, said and thought, regardless of the authority and power of those who wrote it, said it, or thought it. Richard Dawkins is one of the most respected thinkers of our time, but he is neither above nor beyond the psychopathy of One. Under the science/religion distinction, he has binarised all his arguments against religion. His self-righteous rationalisation of a future that can only ‘oppose religion’ is a big ‘NO’ founded on a big ‘YES’ to science and dependent on it. His science-based atheism is narrow-minded, limited and crass. I briefly explain how, without psychotic binarisation, there is no conflict between religion and science; a more subtle notion of atheism can be developed. I also give a couple of examples of atheistic positions that are not dependent on ‘science’ as the binary opposite of ‘religion’. My contention is that most cutting-edge philosophers and scientists, those whose pioneering work brings them face to face with the limits of human understanding, are God-dependent or, at least, God-curious.

Abstract: Think of the man/woman distinction in Genesis/chapter_3, the body/soul binary designed by Socrates/Plato/Aristotle, the East/West divide of Empire, the body/mind split of Descartes and the subject/object dichotomy of modern science, the bourgeoisie/proletariat opposition of Engels/Marx, and the friend/enemy distinction brought to life by Carl Schmitt via Schopenhauer-Nietzsche-Max_Weber in The Concept of the Political. A lot of people have lost their lives because of these distinctions. So, forgetting how dangerous binary oppositional thinking can be, I have decided to add a new ‘killer binary’ to the above list. The ‘individual/person’ distinction is potentially as dangerous as other famous binaries that have come before it. Indeed, it can destroy the nation-state. And yet it can serve as a time/space template for the introduction and preparation of a new way of thinking about contemporary human beings.

Title: Individual/person: a ‘killer binary’

Abstract: The principal intent of this study was to assess EFL teachers’ practice of adapting textbook materials in the newly revised ninth grade and tenth grade English textbooks with particular reference to English language teachers at Mettu, Gore, Hurumu, Darimu and Yayo high schools.

To conduct the study, qualitative research design was employed and the data were analyzed qualitatively. 

The data were collected from twelve grade nine English language teachers and ten grade ten English language teachers through observation and interview. In addition, data were also gathered through document analysis from randomly selected fifty students’ exercise books from both grade levels and the teachers’ daily lesson plans.

The findings of the study revealed that the subjects of this study are not aware of textbook adaptation though they adapt some textbook materials unconsciously, without considering the principles and theories of textbook adaptation. In addition, the results of the study showed that teachers usually evaluate textbook materials before beginning the actual class for the sake of their own understanding not for the sake of making the textbook materials suitable to the students. In other words, although teachers assume that they are doing their best, they still need more orientation concerning the way they use, evaluate and adapt textbook materials to make the contents suitable to their students’ interest, age and level before they begin teaching.

Besides, teachers often use too much deletion on skill based contents and too much addition on grammar oriented topics. What is more, the major factors that restrain teachers from adapting textbook materials were found to be teachers’ lack of awareness, expertise and confidence in implementing textbook adaptation properly and purposefully.

On the basis of the major findings and conclusions reached, recommendations were put forward so as to enable teachers to implement textbook adaptation based on the principles that have been established by scholars.

Textbook adaptation: is the altering of textbook materials to improve or make them more suitable for a particular type of learner or group of learners.

Textbook materials: are any things which are included in the textbook which are designed to facilitate the teaching learning process as a whole such as, tasks, activities, short notes, passages, pictures, graphs, etc.

Abstract: This survey examines the nature of School Library Service in Owerri Municipality, Imo State Nigeria. A combination of oral interview, personal observation and questionnaire were used to collect date while tables and simple percentages were used to analyze data. A total of 100 questionnaires were administered on senior secondary students of SS3 classes and teacher librarians of the five (5) selected secondary schools in Owerri Municipality. The school libraries were found to be rendering only reference without lending and indexing services. Only Emmanuel College, Owerri renders lending services to the patrons. Furthermore, the resources of the libraries were found to be grossly below the Minimum Standard for School Libraries. Amongst the recommendations to reposition the school libraries for optimal performance were: the state government should ensure that no new school should be approved without a school library building stocked with relevant print and non-print resources while school library resources should be provided in line with the Minimum Standard for School Libraries approved by Federal Ministry of Education.

Abstract: The present study aimed to determine the level of critical thinking skills among students in Najran University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Furthermore, the study assed the impact of Academic Achievement, specialization, sex on the critical thinking skills. The study sample consisted of 207 students (talented = 76 students and normal =131 students). The range of the age of the study sample was 18-22 years. The critical thinking skills scale (California Critical Thinking Skills Test; CCTST) was applied on the study sample. The results of the study showed the level of critical thinking skills was low among students university  general. There is no significant differences (p>0.05) in the level of critical thinking among the academic performance (talented and normal students). There is a significantly (p<0.001) high level of critical thinking among scientific studies students compared to students of humanity disciplines. The level of critical thinking was no significantly (p>0.05) between males and females students. In conclusion critical thinking among students is augmented with the type of academic performance, specialization, gender and level.

Abstract: On a daily basis, individuals tend to make inferences about how language is used and how the users of these languages are able to communicate their norms, values, geographical regions, belief systems etc. These attitudes towards specific languages and the people who speak them can be positive or negative. Keeping in view the negative attitudes in the Middle Eastern countries towards English language, there is a need for assessing this area. The present study used a survey research design with a sample size of 50 sociolinguists. Data collection was done using a survey questionnaire. Bar charts and graphs were used for data analysis. The results showed that English language should be promoted for fostering cultural awareness, for promotion socioeconomic development, promoting peace with the western world and for initiating technological advancements and advanced levels of knowledge sharing with the western worlds.

Abstract: Technologies like email promotes language learning and teaching. Accordingly, the following are the advantages for both teachers and students: first, when students use email in the classroom for language learning, they become familiar with the tool, especially how the tool would guide them to enhance their language learning; second, at more convenient times, a teacher could interact with a student or a group of students working on a project; finally, email saves time for some assignments (Rokni, 2013).

This study aimed to find out the language performance in writing of selected e-mails of English major freshman to junior students of the College of Education. The writing inventory was used in assessing the writing activities of the respondents and analyzed on the different levels of language and lexical forms.

Results revealed that the level of language used by the students in this study varied ranging from inquiry to reactions, while organization, vocabulary, and mechanics adopted to the hybrid form of communication. On the lexical forms in their writing outputs, the students used short responses and code-switching.
