Abstract: This study provided a comparative analysis of publication output of academic librarians in three selected tertiary educational institutions in Ogun State. The institutions are Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU); Federal Polytechnic Ilaro (FPI) and; Federal College of Education (FCE). The study examined the demography of the respondents, their publication output and outlets;and obstacles to their publication output.These are done with intention to suggest improvement measures and encouragement to librarians in the state.The descriptive survey research was adopted and questionnaire was used to gather data for the study. A total of 43 librarians in the three educational institutions took part in the study.   The study revealed low publication output especially from polytechnic and college of education compared to university. It was discovered that librarians at university published more articles in local and foreign journals than librarians in both colleges of education and polytechnics.  It also revealed that academic librarians were cognizant of the importance of publishing as an important aspect of their academic activities without which they could be stagnated on their career progression.   In order to solve the problem of low publication output of academic librarians in polytechnic and college of education, it was recommended that the management of various institutions increase their training opportunities available for academic librarians and make funds available for research activities.The academic librarians at the college of education and polytechnic should be allowed as much as possible time for research as university staff.

Abstract: The study sought to examine the association between competitive strategies and performance of commercial banks in Uasin Gishu County. This research was based on theories of resource based view, open systems, strategic balancing, Porter's five forces model and theory of performance.  These theories and variables of the study were related with the help of a conceptual framework. The study adopted descriptive research design. Population for the study comprised of 37 commercial banks and their management staff. The sample size was 34 commercial banks from which 102 respondents who were selected through purposive, stratified and simple random sampling. Data collection was done using structured questionnaires. The collected data was coded, cleaned and tabulated through the use of SPSS version 21 software. Descriptive and inferential data analysis including regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was also used to determine whether there is significant relationship between differentiation strategy, cost leadership strategy, focus strategy and product innovation strategy and performance of commercial banks in Uasin Gishu County. The results of the correlation analysis indicated no evidence of multicollinearity among the variables.   Regression results indicated that the use of differentiation, cost leadership, focus and product innovation strategies had a positive and statistically significant influence on the performance of commercial banks with coefficients of (B=0.560, p<0.001), (B=0.314 p<0.001), (B=0.254 p<0.001) and (B=0.516 p<0.001) respectively. These results indicate that for each unit adoption of these strategies, there was a corresponding increase in commercial bank performance by the values of the coefficients. Based on the results of this study, therefore, it was concluded that competitive strategies positively impacted the financial results of banking institutions in Uasin Gishu County. The study recommended that commercial bank’s leadership teams should be keen on the use of competitive strategies as the success of a business or strategy primarily depends on the innovativeness, uniqueness, energy and expertise of its management staff.

Abstract: Road safety in urban areas of Kisumu County was an illusion despite the existence of Kenya’s potentially enabling road safety policy, which offers due guidance for proactive road traffic controls. Such road safety concerns in that part of Kisumu led to a lingering question because of scanty explanations of the dilemma in previous road safety research and policy reports. In light of this knowledge lacuna, this study sought to investigate the effectiveness of proactive traffic strategies on road safety in urban Kisumu that forms the most complex road transport system in the Nyanza region of south western Kenya. The strategies specifically assessed include designation of road use sideways, enforcement of automobile safety requirements and use of vehicle speed control gadgets. The study adopted descriptive correlational research design based on the quantitative and qualitative approach. The field survey involved a sample of 365 respondents selected from the accessible population 1919 persons using purposive and stratified random sampling strategies. The study found out that the level of road safety was relatively high in urban Kisumu. In particular, road fatality was only relatively reduced on urban roads in Kisumu County. The study findings show that the level of road safety was correspondingly attributed to discrepancies in designating road use sideways, enforcing automobile safety requirements and in the use of vehicle speed control gadgets. Specifically, road side ways were only fairly designated. Automobile safety requirements were only relatively enforced and vehicle speed control gadgets were less used in the urban territories Kisumu. Particularly, designation of road side ways predicted 42.4%, enforcement of automobile basic safety requirements predicted 36.2% and the adoption of safe driving regulator mechanisms predicted 33.4% of road safety in such areas. It was concluded that road safety in urban Kisumu had a very significant bearing on the three proactive traffic control strategies. Urban Kisumu, with moderate performance of these strategies, registered relative road safety. Nonetheless, urban Kisumu areas had lot more to do with such traffic control activities to boost road safety that was just average. It was therefore recommended that Kenya’s State Departments for Transport and Infrastructure, Kisumu County Government, the private sector and all other road users in the urban Kisumu should collectively help bolster proactive traffic control as required by Kenya’s road safety policy. All stakeholders can do that by going about their road use responsibilities in a fashion that ensures best practice regarding proactive of traffic control.

Abstract: The significant downside of reading culture is getting more and more obvious in the Nigeria society. Individuals are more obsessed with getting rich than to improve their own knowhow, they want wealth and not books. Whereas, for a better tomorrow, a clearer and purposeful future, knowledge is the key. It is the path to endless possibilities of enormous human, technological, and capital development. To hand these over to the citizenry, libraries and librarians holds the key, the key that unlocks the door to edifying and meaningful information. 400 well-structured questionnaire entitled the Roles of Libraries and Librarians in Promoting Information Management and  Reading Culture in Nigeria was used to gather information from twelve (12) government schools, 350 of those questionnaire was recovered and analyzed. The result showed that librarians are experts at finding and organizing information meaningfully for political and economic turnaround. The impacts of library would have been greater, if not for challenges such as: lack of functional information policy, poor funding, and ICT challenges, among others. However, this study recommends solutions such as: re-introduction of community/mobile library services to serve as a bold step to reach out to all and sundry in Nigeria, direct budgetary provision to all categories of libraries and enough  manpower to see to library development, among others.

Title: THE ROLES OF LIBRARIES AND LIBRARIANS IN DEVELOPING INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND READING CULTURE IN NIGERIA

Abstract: The study examined the poverty status as well as analysed the factors affecting poverty profile of cocoyam farming households in Edo State. Primary data were obtained from 225 cocoyam farmers by multistage random sampling with the aid of well-structured questionnaire and interview schedule. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Foster-Greer Thorbecke index and Tobit regression model. The results of descriptive statistics revealed that 59.1% of cocoyam farmers were female with majority (73.8%) between 41 and 60 years of age who were married (88.0%) with relatively large household members. The mean monthly per capita household expenditure was N16,277.98 (Nigerian Naira). About 72.5% of the farming households fall below the poverty line that is poor while the other 27.5% fall above the poverty line and thus classified as Non-poor. Out of the poor, 30.7% are core poor while 41.8% are moderately poor. The results of the Tobit regression model showed that household size, educational attainment, marital status and Gender were significant variables. All these variables except educational attainment influenced household poverty positively. The study suggests reducing the number of dependent household members and ensuring ready availability and accessibility of basic amenities like water supply and health care facilities to rural households are measures that could curb the likelihood of poverty in the study area.

Abstract: Hospitality industry is one the most vibrant industry in the world. It consist of various subsections such as hotel, MICE, restaurants, catering establishment, tourism and travel etc. Though the hospitality industry seems to be very positive in future growth and expected to see bright days as the rooms supply is increasing continuously thus it also create opportunities for jobs. Still these are some challenges faced by Indian hospitality industry. The present research paper examines the issues and challenges faced by Indian hotel industry including the operational and management problems. In the present world of globalization, competition is getting tougher day by day and for sustaining in the present competitive market one need to understand the issues and challenges faced by this industry. The major challenges before hotel industry includes sustainable development, skilled labor issue, demand and supply gap, multicultural environment, regularly updating technology and other economic issues.

Abstract: Monitoring and evaluation process helps improve performance and achieve results. Its goal improves current and future management of outputs, outcomes and impact. This includes activities such as, monthly meetings of the small scale farmers, briefings on the research, progress and any gaps realized in the process. This study aims at establishing how Result Based Monitoring and Evaluation activity’s process influence households’ food security. Descriptive survey design was used. The sample size comprised 371 households, 7 local leaders, and 4 agricultural extensions officers. The result show a positive and significant effect of Result Based Monitoring and Evaluation Activity’s process (R= .508, R² =.258 and p<0.05). The study recommends that Policy makers should ensure that public institutions and other implementing agencies adopt the right result based monitoring and evaluation processes that support food security at household level.

Abstract: The Results-Based Monitoring and Evaluation Systems helps in promoting good governance in research projects, strengthening accountability of household input resources utilization; facilitating transparency throughout research project measurement; promoting understanding of Monitoring and Evaluation process amongst all stakeholders and enable effective utilization of value added to food  management through communication of activities and processes. This study aims at establishing how Result Based Monitoring and Evaluation Input process influence households’ food security. Descriptive survey design was used. The sample size comprised 371 households, 7 local leaders, and 4 agricultural extensions officers. The result show a positive and significant effect of Monitoring and Evaluation Input process and households food secuirty (R= .523, R² =.273 and p<0.05). The study recommends that farmers’ cooperative societies and implementers need to emphasize on capacity building that will equip their member farmers with knowledge and skills on new farming techniques and systems in order to bridge the food security divide.

Abstract: This study is to highlight the linguistic or academic dominance of English language in the educational context of Kandahar University. It also is to explore the current factors for why Kandahar University lecturers are motivated to learn English language. The medium of instruction (MOI) at Kandahar University is a Pashto which is an official and national language and spoken by a huge number of people in the southwestern zone of the country – Afghanistan. The primary data are collected through questionnaires to investigate the factors and the data is analyzed through IBM SPSS software with a collection of different ideas. The finding showed that the lecturers emphasized that English language opened up academic opportunities for them. In addition, English language helped them using technologies such as smartphones, computers etc. that is how, all of them wanted to recommend their colleagues, friends, and students to learn English language.

Abstract: This study investigated leadership opinion on extended school duration and the academic performance. The purpose of the study was to determine whether the SHS students performed better when the duration was extended to four years. The qualitative method was employed for the study. A population of 149 teachers who taught both the 3 and 4-year SHS students and 3 headmasters were drawn from three schools in Central Region via purposive and convenient sampling techniques respectively. The unstructured interview guide was used to collect the data. Nine(9) school leaders were interviewed and the interview data was analysed qualitatively. Two (2) research questions were formulated to guide the study. The major finding of the study was that the 4-year cohorts of students performed better than the 3-year cohorts. The MOE and GES, Ghana should consider extending the SHS education duration to four (4) years as a better option to improve students’ academic performance.

Abstract: This paper finds that housing prices are integrated of order one, denoted by I(1). Sub-housing (new goods residential) markets and residential stock markets were not cointegrated. Hence, first-differenced (FD) VARs were constructed and computed. A feedback effect was suggested between these two types of housing markets. The short-run elasticity of new home prices relative to old house prices is about -1.52. The short-run elasticity of old home prices relative to new house prices is 0.92, a near unity elasticity. Effects coming from these two markets differ notably. The old home market shows a greater impact than the new one does. We argue that housing transactions centered on the stock residential market are beneficial for a sustainable housing market.

The study aims to identify the effect of classroom size on the achievement of English students after secondary school

A number of results have been achieved, the most important of which is that the number of students in each semester should be determined at a maximum of 30 students for government buildings and 20 students in rented buildings. The budgets allocated to treat this problem for students in large schools and crowded neighborhoods are high, But what we see is that one class exceeded 35 students, and may be up to 40 students. This indicates a lack of geographical distribution of schools and the lack of extrapolating the future in the development of new buildings to meet the growing and growing population needs.

Abstract: Artwork that aims to express human emotions takes many forms. In particular, performing artists display emotions such as joy, sadness, longing, anger, and deliver their intended messages via theatre, dance, and music. Korean traditional mask dancing, or talchum, is unique in that the performers are completely hidden behind masks and costumes. Unlike theatre or dance, in which a significant amount of emotions are portrayed via facial expressions, talchum allows for its performers to portray characters that are beyond their innate gender and/or social status.

This study attempts to analyze how talchum dancers represent the public voice. Talchum originated among the common people of the Chosun dynasty as a tool for social criticism. By wearing masks (tall), performers can safely, without fear of retaliation from the government, mimic corrupt public leaders and reenact discriminative situations stemming from the Chosun Dynasty’s social class system. Talchum performances during the late Chosun Dynasty, in particular, often mocked corrupt and incompetent aristocrats, as well as apostate monks who led promiscuous lives. Unethical romantic relationships and the miserable lives of poor working-class citizens were also popular sources for this satirical dance. Upon fastening on their talls, performers are exonerated from criminal accusations, and thus can freely express their emotions via their artwork. Unlike the present day in which mass media serves as an easily accessible channel for learning of social absurdities, the common people of the Chosun Dynasty relied on direct, oral communication. In this way, talchum was a valuable channel for exchanging stories of their daily lives. For Koreans, in conclusion, talchum was the commoners' way of rebuking its ruling class as well as the Establishment. In other words, talchum was the people's "voice."

Abstract: This research examines the unease expressed by the Anglophone minority people of Cameroon, as a result of alleged marginalization by the Francophone majority. Discontent had been gathering momentum for decades in different forms. However, things came to a head following a strike staged by Anglophone lawyers and teachers in 2016, to which the government responded with repression. Since then, the situation has escalated and led to an armed conflict with separatist fighters taking over the struggle and claiming to fight for a separate republic for the Anglophones known interchangeably as “Ambazonia” and “The Southern Cameroons”. The paper uses a combination of historical and archival secondary sources, and the technique of observation, backed by qualitative analysis, to examine the dynamics of the conflict, both overtly and covertly. The findings reveal that there is indeed an identity crisis among Cameroon`s Anglophone peoples vis-a-vis their Francophone counterparts. The study concludes that the root cause of the problem lies in the colonial past of the two peoples and offers recommendations that can lead to peaceful coexistence.

Abstract: For the past century, literary individuals have been investigating short stories according to their structural and textual identities. However, few are scrutinized based on the author-to-text connectivity and Sigmund Freud’s concept of psychoanalysis.  To address the fewness of expressive and psychoanalytical analysis of short story, an investigation is conducted on the representative masterpiece. Sylvia Plath's “Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams” is the center of investigation. This study uses qualitative method of discourse analysis. The investigation focuses on two aspects: the author's presence in the text and the psychological viewpoints of the character and the author. This paper further uses historical-biographical theory and psychoanalytical theory to buttress the study's objective. The investigation on the author’s presence in the text is supported by historical-biographical theory while the interpretation on the psychological viewpoints of the character and the author is underpinned by psychoanalytic theory. The study gathers two focal results: this literary piece portrays author's narration of self in the text, and shows behavioral perspectives of the character and the author.  Based on the thorough investigation and findings of the study, it is concluded that Plath's short story reveals binary significations which are anchored on the selected theories of literature.
