Abstract: Parsonage-Turner syndrome, also known as brachial plexus neuritis or idiopathic amyotrophy, is a common undiagnosed inflammatory neuropathy, which is characterized by acute onset of shoulder pain, followed by weakness of the shoulder or upper limb, and occasionally, sensory disturbances. The present report discusses a rare case of Parsonage-Turner syndrome caused by intensive exercise.

Study design: A 29-year-old woman presented to our clinic with 1 month history of bilateral shoulder pain and weakness after heavy intensive exercise. The patient was followed up for 3 months after treatment, and again 1 year after treatment.

Materials and methods: Laboratory analysis was performed to obtain complete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and C-reactive protein levels. Radiography of the shoulder and neck were performed. Brachial plexus magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was also performed. Physiotherapy was performed to relieve the pain.

Results: Brachial plexus MRI showed edema throughout the brachial plexus, with an elevated T2-weighted signal in the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and teres minor muscles. All other test results were normal. A diagnosis of Parsonage-Turner syndrome was suspected based on symptom characteristics: acute pain followed by progressive weakness of the shoulder. Following physiotherapy, the pain gradually improved.

Conclusion:  Several factors are associated with the development of Parsonage-Turner Syndrome, such as sudden intensive exercise, as in this case. Adequate physiotherapy leads to improvement of pain, with excellent prognosis for Parsonage-Turner Syndrome.

Abstract: Facial reconstruction is considered as one of the most important surgeries in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery especially after burn accidents. In this review, we describe the present challenges in reconstructive burn surgery. Describe one of the most suitable therapy techniques and methods for facial burn injury types and identify the appropriate usage, advantages, and disadvantages of facial composite tissue allotransplantation. We conducted narrative review by searching published literature in the following databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, PsycINFO, for all studies concerning with types of Facial reconstructive burn surgery through “December, 2017”. Much progress has been made in the initial therapy of big and complicated burn injuries, causing the survival of a multitude of patients with considerable deformities. The remarkable advancements of plastic and reconstructive surgery over the past century have enabled a lot of techniques to considerably improve the expectation of these patients. In spite of these advances, we still do not have the capability to perfectly recover patients to their preinjury state. Research in a wide variety of locations consisting of regenerative medication, composite tissue allografting, and prosthetics along with improvements in flap surgery and wound healing approaches are most likely to yield enhancements for these patients.

Abstract: Medical modalities are often punctuated by specific examinations for the purposes of understanding various patient conditions more completely. In the case of peri-hepatic capsule calcification in a newborn, this supposition has become even more complex due to the nature of medical interventions and examinations for the specific purposes of improve patient outcomes. Improving medical outcomes for patients, as well as discovering better modalities of treatment and clinical care, are of course always the most important aspects to research of this nature; for discovering better methods for improve comprehension have often led to better clinical application of such learning. Having the ability to take the relevant information presented in the process of reviewing a case study of this nature and use it to diagnose conditions in a clinical setting is one of the most important components of the medical professional’s ongoing training and ultimately their vocational duty. Therefore, all relevant knowledge gleaned through this rigorous academic exercise can quite possibly change the lives of many patients under the care of such clinicians.

Abstract: This study aimed to understand the process of becoming a Paulinian Nurse. It utilized Colaizzi’s methodological interpretation of Phenomenology. The study was conducted in St. Paul University Manila. A total of ten respondents were gathered by convenience sampling. Interview and e-mail correspondence were the main data collection methods. The data went through three stages of coding. There were ten stages that emerged in the quest to understand the lived experiences of Paulinian nurses in their journey towards becoming a Paulinian nurse: Life experience leading to St. Paul’s, Student Life, Academic Education, Character Building, Preparing for Obstacles, Enduring excellence, competence, and reputation, Facing the Professional Arena, Practicing Paulinian Compassion as a Professional Nurse, Success as a Fruit of a Strong Foundation, and Giving back to a nurturing alma mater. There were four common components that each stage possessed: High standards of education, Compassionate Nursing Practice, Character Formation: Values integrated into practice, and Support from the SPUM community. These four components were seen as four formative influences in the making of a Paulinian nurse. Combining the ten stages and the four formative influences depicted the essence of who the Paulinian nurse is.

Abstract: The poor adherence to the use of Intermittent preventive treatment using sulphadoxine –pyrimethamine among pregnant women in Nigeria, contributes to the high prevalence of Malaria in pregnancy and its consequences on mother and the newborn. The objective of this study was to determine the perception of pregnant women on the factors responsible for non-adherence in the selected Primary Healthcare Centres of Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria.

Methods and materials: The study was a qualitative exploratory study using focus group discussion and in-depth interviews among pregnant women 13 to 32weeks gestation in four primary healthcare clinics of two Local government areas of Plateau state, Nigeria. The participants were selected by systematic sampling technique at the Antenatal clinics with discussions and interviews stratified by parity and educational status.

Results: The study revealed that pregnant women who were allowed to take their Sulphadoxine - Pyrimethamine home mostly forgot to use it; some others complained that they were non-adherent due to lack of awareness or education on the relevance of Intermittent preventive treatment. Few multigravidae interviewed revealed side effects to the medication in previous pregnancies as a factor while majority admitted to deliberate non-use on account of the experience of side effects experienced by families and friends. Their opinion on ensuring adherence included: Awareness campaigns, health education, provision of alternative medication, counseling and supervision.

Conclusion: Lack of awareness, fear/ experience of side effects and forgetfulness were reasons identified which impeded adherence to intermittent preventive treatment by pregnant women in this study despite its availability. Targeted health education, counselling and supervision were suggested as the interventions which may improve uptake.

Abstract: “Effectiveness of lecture cum demonstration regarding neurological examination in order to improve knowledge and practice among nursing students of Sumandeep nursing college at Piparia, Vadodara.”

Aims & Objectives: (1) Assess pre-test knowledge and practice regarding neurological examination among nursing students. (2) Evaluate effectiveness of lecture cum demonstration on knowledge and practice regarding neurological examination among nursing. (3) Find out association between pre-test knowledge and practice score with selected demographic data.

Material And Method: One group pre-test, post-test research design, which belongs to pre-experimental design.

Results:  As “t” value of knowledge and practice (30.61& 29.32) is highly significant at 0.05 level. Hence researcher found association between pretest and post test practice score regarding neurological examination on nursing student. The findings indicate variable such as Age (X²=5.48, 15.98), Gender (X²=0.064, 1.17), Year of the study (X²=35.3, 32.4), Previous knowledge related to neurological examination (X²=8.08, 5.71) showed significance at 0.05 level of significance. Thus it can be interpreted that there is significance association between pre-test level of knowledge and practice score. H₂ is partially accepted.

Conclusion: Post day was conducted 8^th day after implementation of lecture cum demonstration programme using the self-structured knowledge questionnaires and observational checklist to find out the effectiveness. The‘t’ test was computed between pre-test and post-test score indicate that there was improvement the level of knowledge and practice among nursing students. Hense it indicates that lecture cum demonstration program was effective.

Abstract: The following case study reviews an incident in which a three months old Saudi infant diagnosed with BTRBGD is admitted through the Emergency. The patient presented to the ER with lethargy and decreased activity. Despite the fact that extensive literature reviews the successful effects of early biotin and thiamine administration in treating Basal Ganglia Disease (a neurometabolic disorder characterized by confusion and seizures among other symptoms),  the case study reviewed below suggests that BTRBGD may in fact be unresponsive in cases in which the disease first develops during early infancy. This conclusion is primarily drawn from the fact that despite attempted treatment, the patient’s case resulted in death.

Abstract: Although adrenocortical tumors are found with some frequency, particularly in older patients, and more often in females, care must be taken to obtain an accurate diagnosis and course of treatment. Adrenocortical adenomas (ACA) and adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) have very distinctly different potential outlooks for patients, and unless treatment is aligned with the correctly identified etiology, outcomes may be severe. The incidence of ACC in pediatric populations is much rarer, and the disease manifests itself with an array of symptoms that can be assessed and identified with treatment options. Unless the correct diagnosis and treatment are determined at an early stage of the disease, the prognosis for the young patient’s status can be very unfortunate. This document will discuss a recent case involving pediatric ACC.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess the severity of adverse effects of tobacco consumption using the saliva flow rate (SFR).

Methodology: A total of 120 patients participated in this study and were divided in three groups; [tobacco chewers, group A; smokers, group B and non-tobacco consumers, group C]. A questionnaire was developed to collect demographic and habitual information of subjects. The salivary flow rate (SFR) was recorded by asking patient to spit in a graduated container at each minute for 5 minutes. Mean SFR was calculated.

Results: Results showed that there is no effect of tobacco consumption on resting mouth salivary flow rate.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that the mean resting mouth SFR does not get affected by consumption of tobacco.

Abstract: Type 1diabetes is one of the most common endocrine conditions in childhood.  Approximately 86,000 children under 15 year are estimated to develop type 1 diabetes annually worldwide In 2015 the number of children with type 1 diabetes exceeded half million. Therapeutic education is central to the management of diabetes, especially in children and adolescents. Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) in residential camps exposes children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes to intensive self-management education in a short-term recreational camp setting. Albasma Camp for children with Diabetes was established in 2008, to educate children about diabetes management in an enriching, diabetes-friendly environment. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of short-term residential camps in improving the practice and skills of diabetes self-management among children attendinga seven-day diabetes camp where 306 diabetic children participated from different states of United Arab Emirates. Data was collected using pretested questionnaire, check list and Focus Groups Discussion. The study found that there was a strongly significant improvementin the overall Diabetes Self-Management (DSM) practices of the study participants pre and post the camp (P-value<0.00).and the majority of the study participants did not exposed to any hyper (67%) or (58%) hypoglycaemic episodesduring the 6 months following the camp. Highly statistically significance between participant ages and average HbA1c pre and postcamp (p value < 0.00) for the between the age of 8 and 12 years, however, among the participants aged 13 to 14 there was a statistically significance in HbA1c values compared to age only before attending the camp, but after the camp the relationship was not significant (P- value > 0.05).Existence of first degree relatives with diabetes, andexperience of attending a previous camp duration of diabetes were not significant factor in the study. The study concluded residential diabetes camps had a positive impact on glycemic control in children living with type 1 diabetes. The study recommended repeated educational programmes to assure continuity of diabetes management and controlling glycaemiain children with diabetes. The study suggested further studies with more duration of follow up.

Abstract: Osteoporosis is a skeletal disease in which bones become brittle and prone to fracture. More than 200 million women worldwide have osteoporosis, thereby implying an urgent need for preventive strategies.

Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitude of women regarding prevention and management of osteoporosis.

Materials And Method: It was a cross sectional study and was conducted in selected nursing colleges in Saudi Arabia. Data analysis was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Result: In this study  the data showed out of  54 samples under 18 years of age women’s the knowledge mean was 6.0with  ± 1.41, 19-25 years  women’s the  mean was 5.3 with ± 1.11,in 26-30 years women’s  mean was 4.5 with  ± 1.65,for 31-35 Years  women’s mean was 4.8 with  ± 1.16,for 36-40 years women’s mean was 5.1 with  ± 2.04.That means in younger age groups knowledge is more as comparing to the elder age groups. In this study most of the samples showed that they were agreed (69.15%) with the opinions. A very few samples were disagreed (6.5%) with the opinions and (24.38%) showed a do not know response. Our study revealed that there is no co-relation between knowledge and attitude. Knowledge has significant positive correlation with Prevention and Management .There was no association between knowledge with their age and no association between attitudes with their educational status. It is concluded that majority of women in this study were not having adequate knowledge regarding osteoporosis.

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to find out the most common behaviours/items from each sections of SSP that can be useful to differentiate children with ASD from children without ASD among Indian population with the help of the caregivers of the children. Age and Gender matched 50 children with and without ASD were approached on different platforms and incorporated in the study on the basis of inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study.47.37% (18 of 39) of the items have greater significance difference and can be used to discriminate children with ASD from children without ASD. On the basis of the most common items, the caregivers and the therapists can differentiate children with ASD from children without ASD. These Behaviors/items play a major role in diagnosis of children with ASD. The sample does not represent the entire population of children with ASD and without ASD; therefore the study can be done with larger sample size. From this study it has been concluded that these items can be used to evaluate sensory processing abilities of children with ASD which can be really very helpful to occupational therapists in assessing and programme planning. SSP was made by the occupational therapists only so the views of caregivers of children with ASD and people with ASD with good intellectual abilities can be incorporated which increases the fruitfulness of SSP. This study recognizes the importance of assessing the performance of children from different cultural contexts, particularly in relation to their everyday functioning or occupation.

Title: Analysis of Each Item of Short Sensory Profile Filled Up By the Caregivers on the Performance of Children with and Without Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: To classify various types of medico-legal deaths seen in BSUTH Makurdi between March, 2013 and February, 2018.

Material and Methods: This is a retrospective study of all medico-legal deaths seen in the Department of Anatomical Pathology over a period of 5 years (March 2013 – February 2018) as recorded in the autopsy register of the hospital.

Results: A total number of 360 autopsies were done during the study period and 155 were medico-legal autopsies representing 43%. 232 were male, 118 female with a male to female ratio 2:1. Homicide death 56(36.1%), RTA 36(23.2%), Sudden death 32(20.6%),Perioperative death 8(5.2%), Anaesthetic death 7(4.5%), Drowning 5(3.2%),  Institutional deaths 4(2.1%), Death in police custody 3(1.9%), Burns 3(1.9%) and Electrocution 1(0.6%).  Age distribution of medico-legal autopsy was between 10-100 years.

Conclusion: The study concluded that homicidal death is the common indication of medico-legal autopsies in the study and is beneficial to law enforcement and jurisprudence, medical education and legal implication of patient management.

Abstract: A spectacle which is a corrective lens is typically worn in front of the eye to improve vision. The most common use is to correct refractive errors. In 2006, 153 million people were living with uncorrected refractive error, as reported by the World Health Organization. Of these, 13 million are children and 45 million are adults.2-5 Furthermore, 90% of people with uncorrected refractive error live in low income countries. Visual impairment as a result of uncorrected refractive error may make present a challenge in obtaining certain jobs which brings it economic effect of individuals. The study was a carried out in schools and it was a cross-sectional study of students attending senior high schools in Ejisu-Juaben Municipal which is one of the 30 administrative and political Districts in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. 315 respondents were selected by systematic and simple random sampling. This study concludes that students do not have adequate knowledge on spectacle use among senior high school students in the Ejisu Juaben District of Ghana. The study also concludes that the perception of students on spectacle use lack any scientifically proven ideas which inform them. Their attitudes may also discourage their friends from putting on spectacles when it is needed. It is recommended that cost-effective strategies for vision screening of school children be incorporated into the school health program of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education together with health education and promotion resources.
