Abstract: Women in the world have a huge contribution for the economic, political and social development of nations. Teaching is one of the social aspect wherein women are involved. In the Ethiopian context, the participation of women in teaching, especially in higher education has been growing from time to time. However, information about their challenges is not well studied. Cognizant of this gap, this study attempted to explore the challenges of new graduated female instructors by taking Bahir Dar University as a case in point. To meet the objective of the study, qualitative method with the case study design was used. In this study, fifteen semi structure interviewees, five key informants’ six focus group discussants, were participated. All of the participants were selected by using non probability sampling technique specifically purposive sampling. Therefore, the data sources were primary data. Semi-structured interview, key informant interview and FGDs were used as a tool for collecting primary data. The data collected were analyzed using thematic analysis methods. The findings from the study revealed that new graduate female instructors faced challenges. Such as, lack of facilities, sexual harassment, negative attitudes of academic staffs, low communication problem, lack of mentoring, lack of orientation, and low skill of using technology. The study has concluded that new graduate female Instructors at the University faced several challenges.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore supply collaboration practices with regard to its implications for supplier relationship management on firm performance in the energy sector in Kenya. In particular, the study set out to evaluate the influence of Supplier Collaboration in New Product Development Relationship practices (SCNPDRP) and assess the influence of Supplier Development Practices (SDP) on the performance of the Energy Sector Firms in Kenya. The research used a cross-sectional evaluation survey approach and quantitative method to select the respondents and collection of data. A sample size of 264 respondents was picked through stratified random sampling. Primary data was collected by use of questionnaires which were administered through the drop and pick method. Linear regression analysis and Pearson’s correlation coefficient were run to determine the relationship between supplier relationship management practices and performance of energy sector firms in Kenya. The findings of the study show that SCNPDRP has a significant influence on the performance of Energy Sector Firms in Kenya. The regression coefficients for SCNPDRP was positively and significantly different from zero. The coefficients of SDP was both negative and moderate but the T-tests was significant. Therefore, the hypotheses for SCNPDRP on the performance of ESF was supported by the data; while the influence of SDP on the performance of ESF was negative. The study concludes that to improve the performance of Energy Sector Firms, SCNPDRPs need to be adopted.

Abstract: Bauhaus which existed for only 14 years holds an important place in the history of design in the World despite its short survival. Studies in every field of art and the education model of the school show its effect until today. Those thoughts that shaped the design idea of the school that consisted of making the technology more aesthetic, design’s being simple, functional and to the point are accepted as design criteria even today. This study examines the period of 1919-1933 in which Bauhaus School of Design existed in terms of existence circumstances, that period’s conditions, periods of the school and political, social and cultural events of the time.

Abstract: It is well known that the television is important to the politics, realer and more comprehensive than the newspapers and books. After the popularization of democracy, it provides with the more abundant materials for the democratic politics and people’s history. For demonstration, in this article it is specially illustrated some recent political movements of people in television beyond but more important than the attractive presidential election, including the author leading the democracy calling for law execution in China and the establishment of theory of armed police, the people in the Middle East proposing the revival of race with law, the international movement of “Marx-MingXun calling for competitive election” for the communist parties and the control of democratic crimes with party disciplines, and so on. As they were more important than the attractive presidential election, it is further manifested the wonderful impact of television on the democratic politics and people’s history.

Abstract: The study sought to establish the reasons behind the failure by the existing Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to grow and develop into productive economic entities to become the engines of growth and development in Zimbabwe. The proliferation of SMEs, started soon after the demise of big firms in the country, was viewed as the best option if the nation was to reclaim its former position as a rapidly developing country. The researchers carried out a qualitative research that sought the perceptions, experiences and views of SME operators, mainly those who went past the 5th year of operation and should have embarked on a growth trajectory; enhanced production, increased numbers of employees and annual turnover. The population was composed of SME operators in the City of Harare and who occupied rented office accommodation and had a strong reason to grow and proceed beyond just survival. The sample composed of purposively selected SME owners and operators who were engaged in interviews and focus group discussions. The data generation process reached a point of saturation with the eleventh interview and three discussion groups. The major finding was that most owners and operators started SMEs as an innovative survival strategy when theywere retrenched from companies that liquidated their businesses due to the hyperinflation of 2007-2009; they were never meant to grow but to provide a livelihood for the owners, who were averse to growth loans. Those that desired to grow were constrained by lack of credit or affordable funding sources,they operated in a restrictive regulatory environment and they did not have, at their disposal, a support mechanism, like mentorship by successful operators. The other reasons for failure to grow included a phobia for bad debts, lack of transport, scarcity of operating space, inadequacy of raw material and fear of natural disasters for those in the agricultural sector. The main recommendation was that the government could put in place a private SME Funding Authority that received a budget from government and funds from other sources, like donations, for lending out at very competitive interest rates, and purely on business considerations. The other recommendation was that other researchers could pursue the suggested funding method and suggest how to operationalisethe Authority to the best advantage of the SMEs. The conclusion was that the available empirical evidence indicated that, if afforded adequate support, SMEs could be the engine of economic growth and development to the nation.

Abstract: There is numerous research conducted on the issue of terrorism in Africa and across the globe.  A lot of the research has been centered on the root causes of terrorism with minimal attention given to ways of how to curb the menace of terrorism.  East Africa has been a victim or terror attack, with Kenya and Somalia being the most affected. The increase of militia groups who base their ideologies on extremist perception, have threatened the stability of the East African Community. In addition, terrorism has rendered East African citizens a target of terror groups, who wish to instill fear and instability. In the continuing search for an effective way for countering terrorism, there is a need to heed to the call of applying a comprehensive approach and analysis to include; how East African countries can fight terrorism effectively. In this light, this paper looks at terrorism in East Africa and the strategies put in place to fight terrorism by covering the following issues: How terrorism is defined; what drives terrorist ambitions; The East African situation; Challenges in counter terrorism efforts; and lastly we give our recommendations on the way forward.

Abstract: This study is a modified replication of the series of old studies conducted by Tucker (1968), Luzares and Bautista (1971), and Aglaua and Aliponga (1998) conducted in prominent universities in Manila. The Match-Guised Technique was utilized to gather authentic data which otherwise would not be obtained thru direct attitude questionnaire. It made use of the same semantic-differential bipolar adjective scales/evaluation sheet and reading script used in the previous studies. The subjects were introduced to judging personalities not from the persons’ physical appearance but from their voices. Using a series of 12 item semantic–differential bipolar adjective scales, they evaluated the voice owners using the same rating scale with eight points from the positive to the negative end. It tried to determine the level of prestige of English and Tagalog and compare the findings with the 20th century studies. The independent variables in each analysis were the 30 judges who are all Tagalogs and the four voice Groups--American English (Am-E), American Tagalog (Am-Tag), Filipino English (Fil-E) and Filipino Tagalog (Fil-Tag). The findings revealed that graduating Education students perceived English to be more prestigious than Filipino as sustained by the high ratings they gave to American and Filipino speakers of English; however, they rated the Filipino speakers of English a little more favorably than their American counterparts. The results are parallel with the 1968 and 1971 findings; nevertheless, different from the 1998 finding that the two official languages shared the same level of prestige.

Abstract: This was a study on the relationship between turnaround strategies and the performance of state owned Sugar Companies in Kenya. Two specific objectives formed the study and these were: to assess the relationship between cost reduction strategies and diversification strategies respectively on the performance of state owned sugar companies in Kenya. The total target population was 406 managers cutting across all the management levels in all the selected companies from which a sample of 197 respondents were randomly selected after having employed the stratified   and random sampling techniques. Descriptive Survey research design was employed for the study with closed ended questionnaires as data collection instruments. One questionnaire was administered to each sampled respondent. The strata earmarked for questionnaires were the top management, middle level management and the operational level management as they are all involved in organization turnaround process. Data analysis and interpretation was done quantitatively based on descriptive statistics such as measures of location (mean) and measures of dispersion (standard error mean) as well as inferential statistics mainly, the bivariate Pearson correlation, multi-linear regressions and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The hypotheses was tested at 95 percent confidence level (level of significance, α = 0.05). Modernization strategies presented insignificant results to organizational performance though the correlation studies showed moderate positive relationship to organizational performance for all the two independent variables. Both cost cutting and diversification strategies presented insignificant results to organizational performance though the correlation studies showed moderate positive relationship to organizational performance for all the two independent variables. The study concluded with an emphasis on human resource restructuring as the key indicator for successful turnaround process. Key recommendations included the realignments of cost cutting strategies to cut on the costs as a cost reduction strategy.

Abstract: The role of the mass media in societies has always been to inform, educate and entertain. Thus, the mass media are tools for accelerating development, it is therefore, not surprising that the concept of development communication has been brought to bear on society by communication scholars. While the mass media have been variously used for development communication, this study examined how local newspapers have been used in the development process in Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined the extent to which local newspapers reported development and Non - development Information. It is in this context that the study investigated the incidences of development - oriented and Non development information in five Nigerian Local Newspapers, hypothesizing that the newspapers would present more development - oriented than Non development information and that the development - oriented issues would be diversified. The result of the content - analysis aspect of the study revealed that the local newspapers were more Non developmental in their orientation than developmental. The interview aspect of the study, however, did not sustain the hypothesis that the issues of development would be diversified as findings/result indicated that the papers presented political issues as the leading/ dominant coverage. Indications from the findings suggest that sustained development in the localities in Nigeria requires reportage of diverse development - oriented than Non development issues.

Abstract: Majority of the poor and food insecure in Africa live in rural areas, and most of them depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. In Kenya, smallholder farmers working in rural areas dominate agribusiness in the country, but are the most marginalized in terms of receiving inputs and support from the government. They lack access to well-functioning markets and poor infrastructure causes them to lose their perishable input before it even gets to the markets, making them more food insecure. Effective and active participation of the Kenyan government in collaboration with other stakeholders could be the best solution for spurring agricultural productivity in the rural areas. This article therefore seeks to address some complexities of food insecurity as well as highlight issues affecting rural smallholder farmers in Kenya, providing a comprehensive situational analysis, and making recommendations on how Kenya can spur agricultural productivity amongst rural smallholder farmers.

Abstract: China is rising. The United States of American remains a global hegemon although China is likely to overtake it. Some realists and liberalists are predicting that this rise of China may lead to a conflict with the United States of America. This is called China threat theory. Paul Ribeiro thinks this is a constructed fear which is emanating from the West looking at China from their own lens. He however says China may be feeding into this fear by giving wrong signals. China is not emphasizing on advantages that her rise brings to the world at large.

This paper attempts to look at this fear in the context of China’s relationship with Africa. Africa could be the battle ground for influence for the two superpowers. The reviewers think that Africa has no reason to fear. Africa can contribute to the reconstruction of a mutual relationship in which China, the United States of America, and Africa can build mutual trust among the three actors.

Abstract: The study aimed to investigate the lives of the non-performing students in Iloilo Science and Technology University – Dumangas Campus, School Year 2015-2016. The case study employed phenomenology method in analyzing results for each relevant question. Data were obtained through validated interview-guides.Results revealed the following that most of the participants belong to low income parents. Almost of the participants mothers are plain housewives. Only two participants belong to the broken families. Students are less motivated and have low self-esteem. Students have difficulty in their studies that affect their academic achievement. The top most usual activities done by the students at home are doing the household chores and their usual activities done in school is doing their assignments. The lives of the non-performing students depend upon their socio-economic and family background which are considered as a factor in their academic performance. As the saying goes, “poverty is not a hindrance to success” is true to these kind of students. They aim high and dream high but because of poverty they encountered many challenges and depression which are hindrances for being a performer but since their dreams is higher than their status in life they have to think of achieving their goals because it is only through these that they can be alleviated from poverty. The researcher recommends the theory for validation.

Due to this synthesis of players in the US policy making process, the US-Africa policy almost appears vague or unclear save for the fact that it constricts on national security and economic interests of America.
